HoboFo is the foyer just outside my freshman dorm room on the second floor of Lechner Hall. Walking in from the stairs, there are a couple worn-out couches and white board. While this may not seem very special, the group of people that formed around HoboFo changed my life.
For the people on my floor, the fastest route to food was through HoboFo. For those on the two floors above, the second floor couches were a natural resting place, an oasis, in the middle of the long trek up the stairs. I was conveniently located right outside. Whatever the reason, there was always someone in HoboFo. As we got to know each other, it soon became the hang out for study groups, board games, and TV marathons. Whether it was grabbing a quick meal together or taking a road trip for a concert, HoboFo became a community. If I was stuck on a homework problem, I could ask one of the Hobofobians who was either in my class or familiar with the subject, and get the help I needed. Birthdays were celebrated in full Honors dorm style and dinner with the crew.
One of my favorite memories from HoboFo was our Christmas party. We had decided to celebrate the holiday before leaving for Christmas break, so I picked up some cupcakes and my friend drew a Christmas tree on the whiteboard. We exchanged cards and gifts while sharing stories about our first semester at A&M. It was in that moment full of love and joy, I knew we were a family and had supported each other through many of the highs and lows of freshman year.
HoboFo was my home away from home during my freshman year. As my first experience of college life, I learned about Texas A&M and Honors traditions, and gained first-hand information about classes and student organizations as well. Being a part of HoboFo also allowed me to develop my interpersonal skills and taught me how to study with others. It is where I met some of my closest friends, including my future roommate, and where I learned the importance of a supportive community. Because of the friendships and memories I had made through HoboFo, I found a place at Texas A&M where I could be myself and built the confidence I needed for a successful transition to college. HoboFo showed me how much I value friendship and community, and that I want to continue to foster the welcoming environment of the Honors dorm by becoming a sophomore advisor.
